Note: Published fees cover different stages and may change. Confirm who conducts each stage, whether feedback and a report are included, and the total pathway cost.

What Happens in an ADHD Assessment?

1. Initial Consultation (30–60 min)

You describe your symptoms and history to a psychiatrist or psychologist. They'll ask about childhood, school, work, and relationships. This is the foundation of the assessment.

2. Questionnaires & Rating Scales

You'll complete standardised rating scales (typically Conners, DIVA, or ASRS). Some clinics also request a collateral questionnaire from a family member or close friend.

3. Cognitive Testing (optional)

Higher-cost assessments often include cognitive testing (IQ, memory, processing speed) to rule out other conditions and provide a fuller picture. Not all ADHD assessments include this.

4. Diagnostic Report

The provider should explain the written outcome, feedback and recommendations included. Ask the organisation or clinician receiving a report what current evidence it requires; a report does not guarantee medication, accommodations or another service.

ADHD Assessment in Ireland: FAQs

How much does a private ADHD assessment cost in Ireland?

Published prices can describe screening, one assessment stage or a complete pathway. Confirm the total fee, responsible clinician, report, follow-up and cancellation terms directly. Insurance and tax treatment depend on current rules and individual circumstances.

How long is the HSE wait for an ADHD assessment?

Public assessment access and waiting times vary by age, eligibility and local service area. Ask your GP or local service for the current pathway, and confirm private availability directly with any provider before booking.

Do I need a GP referral for a private ADHD assessment?

Most private ADHD clinics in Ireland do not require a GP referral: you can self-refer directly. However, bringing a GP letter with your history can speed up the consultation and is useful if you want medication afterward.

Can I get ADHD medication after a private assessment?

Medication requires a separate individual medical decision by an appropriately authorised prescriber. Confirm whether medical assessment, prescribing and follow-up are included or charged separately, and do not assume another clinician will accept shared care.

Is a private ADHD diagnosis valid for workplace accommodations?

A report may support a workplace adjustment request, but no report guarantees a particular decision. Ask the employer or relevant adviser what information is needed for the individual request.

What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist for ADHD?

Professional roles and assessment pathways differ. Confirm who conducts and signs each stage, their exact professional status, what the report covers and whether a separate medical review would be required.
