Neurodiversity at work: start with the barrier

A useful workplace conversation starts with the work barrier and a practical adjustment, not assumptions about a diagnosis. Needs differ between people with the same label.
A careful process
- Ask what work task or environment creates difficulty.
- Discuss a specific, proportionate change and how it will be reviewed.
- Limit health information to what is necessary for the purpose.
- Document the agreed action, owner and review date.
- Seek occupational-health, HR or legal input where the decision requires it.
Examples to discuss may include clearer written instructions, predictable scheduling, a quieter space, assistive technology or an agreed communication method. These are discussion prompts, not entitlements or personal recommendations.
Do not promise an outcome
A report does not automatically create one specific workplace adjustment. Employers and workers should use current Irish equality guidance and get advice for the actual circumstances.
